“An Injury to One is an Injury to All”
Solidarity Statement on the May 21, 2010 Proceedings in Los Angeles City Hall
I/We support the LA Right to Housing Collective and their efforts to promote and defend human rights. The LA City Council must act immediately to strengthen and protect housing rights for all residents of Los Angeles.
I/We express our outrage over the human rights abuses perpetrated against low-income residents and organizations in the LA Rights to Housing Collective on May 21st.
The human right to housing is the responsibility of our government and elected officials, including the Los Angeles City Council. The defeat of the moratorium on rent increases on May 21st represents a violation of the human right to housing.
Cornerstones of democracy include freedom of speech and the right to protest injustice without fear of retaliation, violence and criminalization. Nowhere are those rights more important than in LA’s City Hall. The LA City Council’s use of police force and violence against constituents exercising their rights on May 21st will not be tolerated. A public apology and a full investigation of the use of force by the police, at a minimum, are already overdue.
